Last April I took my father, husband and a Japanese friend on a 90 minute Forth Boat Tour under the 3 Forth Bridges and on to Blackness Castle. It was a blustery Scottish day on the water, however it did not detract from the beautiful scenery and the fabulous commentary from our guide. Whilst this tour did not visit Inchcolm Island, it did edge alongside to enable photos, however for those interested in the Island, try the bus and boat tour from Waverley.
I learnt a lot about the history of the area and Inchcolm and South Queensferry’s part in the second World War, particularly that of the air force. The boat then proceeded in the direction of Rosyth shipyard and we were lucky enough to get a glimpse of the HMS Prince of Wales aircraft carrier, which was in for a makeover. The wind decided to pick up, so we headed inside just in time for our scones with jam, cream and a cup of tea. The icing on the cake for my 80 year old father! Whilst enjoying our sweet treat, the seals deigned to pop their heads up, giving everyone the opportunity to get some nice wildlife photos.
On the return trip we had our Outlander moment, enjoying the silhouette of Blackness Castle from the water, a definite extra to enhance your trip once you are back on dry land. Netflix’ The Outlaw King was also partially filmed there.
The tour was good value for money and a great way to spend a morning, no matter what the weather. There is also a licensed bar below deck.
We have negotiated a special 10% discount for our guests on the 3 Bridges Bus and Boat Experience and on the Blackness Castle, Three Bridges Cruise (includes a complimentary cream tea).
